The night after some bad weather, a small New England town becomes enveloped in a thick, eerie mist, trapping the locals inside a supermarket fearing for their lives.

Originally a novella by Stephen King, The Mist has been adapted to the screen by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) to create a horror film with a surprising ending. Thomas Jane (The Punisher) and Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River) star as two of the people fighting for their lives from a supernatural mist.

The Mist Overview

The night after some very bad weather, a small New England town becomes enveloped in a thick, eerie mist. A group of locals and out of towners is forced to stay inside the supermarket, after a local runs in bleeding and screaming hysterically that something in the mist had taken his friend.

The plan to stay within the safety of the supermarket falls apart as supernatural creatures from the mist, begin breaking through the windows to get inside. With the addition of religious hysteria developing, dividing the group, the hero and his band of newly made friends must devise a way to escape the supermarket and find help and safety.

The Mist Review

The director didn’t waste time in the beginning of the movie, and ‘the mist’ closed in within the first 10 minutes. When at first it appeared as though the mist will contain nothing but ridiculous looking monsters, it redeemed itself well and will have the viewer entertained until the end. Much like Stephen King’s other books and movies, there are plenty of dead bodies and grotesque body parts to be found.

The plot cleverly tackled mob mentality and religious hysteria that would very well break down an otherwise civilized society, in such extreme situations. The panic that ensues and forces a small band of people to leave the ‘safety’ of the supermarket will have the viewer intrigued and shocked. The ending was surprising and unexpected, but added depth to the storyline and will leave the viewer pondering the situation, and contemplating their own actions in such an event.

Stephen King’s movies can quite often be hit or miss, but fans of the author will find The Mist to be one of the better ones. It is a clever scary, gross out horror that is sure to leave the viewer satisfied.
