Tom Welling (TV series, Smallville), Maggie Grace (TV series, Lost) and Selma Blair star in this thriller, set in a small fishing town being haunted by a deadly fog, with the residents of the town being forced to face up to the ghosts of the past who are seeking revenge.
The Fog Overview
An 1865 schooner returns to a small town off the Oregon coast under the cover of a deadly fog to seek revenge. Nick (Welling) and his girlfriend Elizabeth (Grace) and Nick’s friend Stevie (Blair) are all descendents from the town’s founding fathers. As the vengeful ghosts and fog embark upon the town, killing everything and everyone in their path, Nick, Elizabeth and Stevie race to save Stevie’s son, and themselves as they unravel the mystery behind the town.
The Fog Review
Elizabeth has just arrived back into town, and back into Nick’s life when the fog starts closing in. The fog destroys all electrical equipment it touches, smashes windows, starts fires and turns old ladies into charred skeletons. The deadly fog is full of the ghosts from an 1865 schooner that are seeking revenge due to a betrayal by the founding fathers of the town.
Elizabeth begins to put the pieces of the puzzle together after she finds the diary written by one of the founding fathers, explaining a deal they reneged on and how they stole gold and burned alive a boatload of lepers. She and Nick must try and escape the fog and saving Stevie’s son in the process, before the fog reaches them all. The unraveling of the mystery gives them no insight into how to stay alive as the fog continues to kill indiscriminately.
This remake of John Carpenter’s 1980’s version promises scares but fails to deliver any. There is no suspense and while the effects of the fog itself are good, the deaths are ridiculous and the ghosts are laughable.
The acting is pretty stale and there is not enough character development for the viewer to relate to anyone or to care if they die. The plot isn’t interesting enough to hook the viewer in and verges on the ridiculous.
While fans of B-grade horrors that make them laugh, may enjoy aspects of the film, viewers that want horror that gets them scared, will be disappointed. The scariest thing about this film is the time wasted in watching it.
