I Love You Man Overview
Real estate agent Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd) is a sensitive and caring guy and has just proposed to the love of his life, Zooey (Rashida Jones). When Peter overhears Zooey and her girlfriends talking about how Peter has no close male friends, Peter realizes that aside from appearing strange, he also lacks a best man and will fail to fill up his side of the bridal party.
So the search begins for Peter to find a new friend and best man, and he finds himself going on a series of man-dates set up for him by his mother, his gay brother and even Zooey’s girlfriends. But Peter has always gotten along better with females then the beer swilling, poker playing macho men, so the dates usually end in disaster or the men fall very short of his expectations.
I Love You Man Review
While everything in Peter’s life is going well, he has just proposed to his girlfriend and she has accepted, it becomes apparent that he has no close male friends, and no one he can ask to be best man at his wedding. So begins the series of hilarious man-dates for him to find ‘the one’.
The dates continue to be one disaster after another until Peter finally meets an honest and charming man named Sydney Fife (Jason Segel) at an open house. They exchange business cards and Peter makes an embarrassing call to Sydney asking him if he’d like to catch up and talk real estate.
Viewers will be in stitches watching Peter trying to be cool and failing miserably, from his air guitar to his playing poker with the boys. Peter’s actions are almost always embarrassing and viewers will wince with embarrassment for him and wonder why he won’t stop talking. Peter’s desperate attempt to fit in with the guys is as hilarious as it is heartwarming and Paul Rudd portrays a very funny and likeable guy.
Jason Segel does well to portray the blokey yet caring male friend, whose behavior ranges from the super-sweet to the super-weird, but is always incredibly funny. Jon Favreau does well in his interpretation of the macho beer swilling guy who you love to hate, and is a huge step away from the sensitive guy he played so long ago in Swingers, and Jaime Pressly (My name is Earl), is funny as his poor suffering wife who doesn’t put up with his nonsense.
While this film’s ending is predictable, it doesn’t dampen the enjoyment of the movie, which will have audiences in hysterics. With excellent and incredibly funny performances by all, this movie is well worth seeing. It is rated R simply because of the language and sexual references, but there is nothing crude about it.
