The first horse year is approximately equivalent to 6 - 8 human years; the second horse year is another 5 human years. The third horse year adds roughly another 4 human years and the fourth horse year is another 3 human years. After that, each horse year is approximately 2.5 human years.   • 4 human years - Physically, emotionally and physiologically mature = 20 horse years
  • 5 to 24 human years = 21 - 70 horse years

While heredity and individuality are not within the owner's control, there are a few things that owners can do to try and maximize their horse's lifespan. Feeding a good quality diet is important as is maintaining good dental health. Regular exercise and providing preventative medical care, such as vaccinations and worming is crucial for good health, as is taking care of the horse's hooves. It is also important for owners to tend to any illness or injury promptly.
