Most MMORPGs charge a monthly subscription fee, but there are free-to-play MMORPGs too. Here are just ten of them.

Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) fall into several financial categories. Most are subscription based, where gamers are required to buy the game and pay a monthly recurring subscription fee. This gives gamers access to all the game's content.

Some, like Guild Wars offer free-to-play but gamers will have to purchase the game in stores first. Others offer the game download for free and allow free play; however there are some restrictions and these types of games encourage gamers to pay a subscription to receive the extra content.

Other games are free to download and free to play, but gamers are required to purchase additional items from an online store (with real money, not in-game money), to enhance their game-play experience such as mounts and armor upgrades.

Free Online Games – Free MMORPGs

There are plenty of free online games but free MMORPGs are sometimes harder to find, however, free MMORPGs are becoming more abundant. Usually free to download and free to play, these games still manage to make money using in-game advertising, purchase of extra items like clothing, mounts and potions, and sometimes offering premium accounts for a fee.

Here is a list of just ten of the fun free online games that fall into the MMO or MMORPG category:

#1 Anarchy Online

Anarchy Online is a science fiction themed MMORPG offering a free version that includes in-game advertising.

#2 Dreamlords – The Reawakening

Dreamlords – The Reawakening is a free-to-play MMORTS, a mix of Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMO) and Real Time Strategy (RTS). There are two models; a web based one for long-term strategy play and a client software based model for battles and conquering.

#3 Guild Wars

Guild Wars is a popular MMORPG. The game can be purchased in stores, but is free-to-play. Visit the Guild Wars site for more information.

#4 Hero Online

Hero Online is a free MMO based on Asian myths and legends and written by martial arts novelists. Action packed and filled with heroic quests and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon type moves.

#5 Rakion

Rakion is a free to play, real-time, room-based, fantasy MMO featuring good graphics and strong storylines. Reviews for Rakion at Gamespot list pros as great graphics and game-play as well as fun PvP but on the downside gamers are finding it laggy (latency time) and lacking in game support.

#6 Rappelz

Rappelz promises sexy graphics, customizable pets and fierce PvP (Player versus Player). It features three playable races each with a home city, decent graphics and is free to play for life.

#7 Requiem: Momento Mori

Requiem: Momento Mori is a horror MMORPG previously called Requiem: Bloodymare. It is dark themed and offers free-to-play and pay-to-play options. Also has both PvP and PvE (Player versus Environment) servers. Visit the Requiem: Momento Mori for more information.

#8 Rohan Online

Rohan Online (R.O.H.A.N. : Blood Feud Renaissance of Human and Nature), features township battles where guilds take over and control enemy towns for a week. It’s free to download and free to play.

#9 Runes of Magic

Runes of Magic offers free download of game and no monthly fees. It has been compared to World of Warcraft (WoW), and while WoW looks 'cartoon', Runes of Magic is worse looking.

#10 Secrets of Solstice

Secrets of Solstice is another free MMO. In this game, all players start as the same class, diversifying into other classes as they gain skills.

These are just some of the free MMOs available and though often they are lacking in game-play or graphics compared with subscription based MMORPGs, they certainly fill a void especially when finances are concerned. Those interested in subscription based MMORPGs should read Aion: The Tower of Eternity and Brief Comparison Between Online Games (MMOs), which compares three popular games; Age of Conan, Everquest 2 and Pirates of the Burning Sea.

Information was correct at time of publication but as game developers are constantly improving game-play, subscription changes may occur. For up-to-date information or to play, visit the games’ official websites.
