Cats often become the furry four-legged children of the family and some owners enjoy celebrating their cat's birthday and buying them gifts.

Aside from giving a cat birthday gift, how else can you celebrate? By having a party of course! Cats usually don’t like a large group of people or a rowdy party, so it’s best to keep festivities small with just the immediate family present.

You can make a simple birthday cake for your cat using canned cat food and decorate it with a candle. Be sure not to light the candle as curious cats could burn their whiskers. Also, don’t let any of the humans eat the cake!

Spend the day doing things your cat will enjoy. If she wants to sit in your lap for hours, let her. If she likes playing with a ball of wool, let her do that. Give her lots of attention and spoil her, after all, that’s no less than anyone expects or deserves on their birthday.

What Type of Gifts Should You Give Your Cat?

Wondering what to give as a cat birthday gift? There are plenty of cat toys and accessories available. Some good choices include:

  • Scratching Posts – Cats love to scratch because it sharpens their claws and leaves behind a scent, so why not buy your cat a new scratching post for their birthday. Cat scratching posts are available in all shapes and sizes and can include platforms and cubbies built into them. If your cat already has a scratching post, spruce it up by adding a dangly mouse or ball toy to it.
  • Cat Tunnels, Tents and Cubbies – cats love to hide inside tents and cubbies and go running through tunnels so any of these make a great cat birthday gift. Your cat will spend hours hiding and playing. Alternatively a cardboard box can work well too.
  • Cat Toys – Cats like toys that they can chase, mimicking the act of hunting for prey, so toys such as balls, toy mice, things with feathers or anything on a string the owner can pull away work well. Toys that contain catnip are also a favorite and can be purchased from pet stores. Alternatively, you can buy catnip from a herb or new age store and sew the herb into a piece of material then add a string to make a new toy, or simply place some catnip inside a toy your cat already owns.
  • Other Cat Birthday Gifts – Other ideas include a new bed or blanket, a new collar, tasty cat treats or if your cat responds to television, you could purchase a DVD with lions or other large cat, birds or anything your cat might enjoy watching.

Why Celebrating a Cat’s Birthday is Important to the Owner

Celebrating a cat’s birthday is important for owners because it is a way for them to spoil their cat and there is nothing wrong with that. It is important for owners to remember that their cat is not human and provide it with appropriate diet and healthcare, but as for spoiling it with a cat birthday gift or treats; this can only benefit both cat and owner.

It has long been known that owning a pet provides health benefits to many people and over half of American pet owners treat their pets as one of the family. So cat owners can wear their party hats with pride in the knowledge that they are certainly not alone.
